Adjaye Associates Studio,Accra

Designed by Adjaye Associates, this studio project pushed the scale, precision and structural potential of stabilised rammed earth within contemporary architecture.

The process began with extensive material sourcing and testing across Accra to develop the right composition, colour and texture for the project. Prior to construction, full-scale mock-ups were produced to refine the finish and study how the vertical earth fins would sit within the architectural language of the building.

Once approved, construction moved into execution at an ambitious scale. The project included 54 vertical rammed earth fins, each rising 9.6 metres high, alongside engineered rammed earth walls spanning 16.2 metres across the north and south facades — all constructed without control joints.

The upper-level walls were built along the edge of a 26-metre post-tensioned cantilever slab extending from the first to third floors, while the ground-floor east and west elevations feature 22.4-metre-long walls, compacted entirely by hand.

Blending engineering, craftsmanship and material innovation, the project stands as a significant exploration into the possibilities of earth construction at an architectural scale.
